Unresolved vs Unidentified UFOs
Direct answer: The words unresolved and unidentified are used in a specific way in official UFO reporting, and they do not mean the same thing. Fox News Digital reported on November 1, 2026 that former AARO director Sean Kirkpatrick described the difference plainly: according to that report, unresolved usually means there is not enough data to reach any conclusion either way, while unidentified means an object can be described but its identity is still unknown. The sections below lay out the distinction as it has been reported.
What unresolved means
According to Fox News Digital, Kirkpatrick said that a case marked unresolved is one where investigators simply do not have enough information to say what the object was. In that account, the label is not a statement that something unusual happened, and it is not a statement that nothing did. It reports only that the available data cannot support a firm conclusion in either direction.
What unidentified means
Fox News Digital reported that Kirkpatrick described unidentified as a step further along. In that account, an unidentified object is one that can be characterized, meaning investigators can describe features such as its shape, speed, or behavior, yet they still cannot match it to a known source. The object has been observed and described, but not named.
Why the wording matters
The distinction matters because the two words are easy to read as proof of something strange, when the reporting describes them as careful, limited labels. Fox News Digital also reported Kirkpatrick's claim that some publicly released cases labeled unresolved had in fact been resolved, and that Pentagon leadership had told AARO to remove the resolution language, although the report noted he did not say when that happened or who gave the instruction. Readers can weigh that claim for themselves.
How this connects to UFO and UAP
These case status words sit alongside the broader shift in terminology from UFO to UAP, which stands for unidentified anomalous phenomena. The terms answer different questions. UFO and UAP describe what is being talked about in general, while unresolved and unidentified describe the status of a specific case after investigators have looked at it.

What does unresolved mean in a UFO report?
According to Fox News Digital, Kirkpatrick said unresolved means investigators do not have enough information to say what the object was. It is not a claim that something unusual happened, nor that nothing did.
What does unidentified mean in a UFO report?
Fox News Digital reported that Kirkpatrick described unidentified as an object that can be characterized, such as its shape or behavior, but that still cannot be matched to a known source.
Does unidentified mean alien?
No. As reported by Fox News Digital, unidentified means an object has been described but not matched to a known source. It is a statement about what is known, not a conclusion that the object is extraterrestrial.
